BREWER WINS DANNY GAMBLE OPEN FOR 3RD TIME, MACONACHIE WINS PLATE.

Rodmersham's John Brewer beat club mate and training partner, Neil Baker in straight games to take his 3rd straight Danny Gamble Memorial Tournament title. Neil started off stronger, taking a 7-4 lead in the 1st game only for John to fight back to lead 9-7 and eventually closing out the first game 15-10. The 2nd game saw Neil race to a 6-0 lead with John having one too many winners to retrieve! As Neil edged closer to 13-10 in the 2nd game, John cut out the errors and tied the game at 13-13 before denying Neil by taking it 15-13. The final game saw John take a big lead in a game for the first time, with him just about getting everything back and raced away to a 15-9 win in the 3rd to pick up his 3rd title!

Middleton's Ross Maconachie overcame a rejuvenated and determined Graham Cutting to secure a 3-2 win in the final of the Danny Gamble Memorial Tournament plate competition. With Ross being the favourite, Graham upset the form book, storming to a 10-4 lead in the first before closing it out 15-12 after a late fight back from Ross. Ross continued his good form and powered to a 15-8 win in the 2nd with Graham making mistakes and Ross steadily retrieving shots in difficult rallies. Graham came up with some outrageous retrieving on his own as Ross found himself having to put the ball away more than once on several occasions to win the rally. This lead to mistakes which Graham capitalised on and took the 3rd game 15-10. The 4th was hotly contested with it the scores tied at 7-7 until Ross broke away to lead 13-7 and eventually closing out the game 15-11. The 5th saw even more frantic rallying and retrieving with Ross leading comfortably 11-6 only for Graham to pull the score back to 13-13! A mistake from Graham gave Ross match ball and a fast and furious rally followed with Ross winning it on a mishit!!

28th May 2009 - Magor books place in Handicap Final

Joe Magor booked his place in his first Danny Gamble Closed Handicap final, edging out 2005 Champion, Steve Snellgrove 3-1 (11-9, 11-8, -3-11, 11-7) to face the 2007 Champion ,Julian Rivers, who had knocked out last years winner, Graham Cutting in the other semi final. 1st June 2009 - Magor overcomes Rivers in tense Handicap final!

Joe Magor survived a tense second game to win the Danny Gamble Memorial

Closed Handicap tournament with a 3-0 (11-6, 11-10, 11-7) win over 2007

winner, Julian Rivers. With the scores starting ay -11-0, The first game was

played at a furious pace with Joe keeping Julian pinned to the back corners

before Julian fought back with some deceptive boasts and his patented

reverse angle boast that he is well known for!!!! The second game was tight

with Julian leading 8-2 before uncharacteristically making 4 mistakes off the

serve for Joe to close the gap to 8-6 before finally levelling the game at 10-10

to set up a sudden death situation. Julian was then denied a stroke and a let

was played before Joe won the next rally with a dying forehand length to lead

2-0. The final game was played at the same fast pace with Julian starting to

make errors which allowed Joe to overcome the handicap and win the 3rd 11-7

to win the title for the first time.

Final Score: Joe Magor beat Julian Rivers 3-0 (11-6, 11-10. 11-7)

Full Results and Scores can be found by going to the ‘DRAW’ section.

1st June 2009 - Clarke ousts Cutting in plate final thriller!

Gary Clarke recovered from going two sets to one down to win the Danny

Gamble Memorial Plate in a 3-2 win over Canterbury’s Graham Cutting.

Graham Started off strongly taking the first game 15-7 with some

good retrieving which caught Gary out. Gary came out firing winners in

the second game hitting several drop shots into the nick to run away

with the 2nd game, 15-4. Graham regrouped and after a series of dives

from each player! (both not wanting to be outdone by the other in the

diving stakes!), Graham managed to win it 15-11. Gary continued to hit

winning drop shots in the 5th and lead 11-5 before closing the game out

15-6 to set up a deciding 5th game. Gary raced to a 6-0 in the 5th and

kept in control as he lead 9-5 and 12-7 before closing out the game 15-12

and the match 3-2 to retain the plate title that he had won in 2007.

Final Score: Gary Clarke (Rodmersham) beat Graham Cutting (Canterbury) 3-2 (7-15, 15-4, 11-15, 15-6, 15-12)

Full Results and Scores can be found by going to the ‘DRAW’ section.

1st June 2009 - Brewer edges out Jeal in epic final!

John Brewer survived a late rally from Ted Jeal to successfully  defend

his Danny Gamble Memorial Squash Tournament title. Jeal, playing in his

first Danny Gamble tournament had earlier survived a comeback from

last year’s finalist, Neil Baker. Despite being 2-1 down and 12-6 down

in the 4th game, Baker had recovered to win the 4th set 15-13 and lead

14-12 in the 5th game before Ted fought back to level the scores at

14-14 to set up a sudden death situation. Neil, unfortunately, conceded

a stroke from the following service return to hand the match to Jeal and

a place in the final against John.

John started the first game strongly, racing to the 9-3 lead with Ted

struggling with John’s pace. He soon recovered, and pulled the score back

to 11-13, keeping the ball tight and hitting some stunning winners. John

edged the game 15-13 after a couple of errors from Ted. In the second,

John started off very strongly, retrieving very well and putting Ted

under a lot of pressure, forcing him to retrieve from difficult positions.

He duly won the 2nd, 15-7 to put him a strong position. With Ted looking

out of answers, he changed his game in the 3rd and kept the ball tight on

the backhand and went for less risky shots. The scores were tied until

9-9 before a mini run by Ted saw him break way to lead 12-9 with a series

of stunning winners and rallies that had John diving all over the court,

much to doubles partner, Gary Clarke’s, delight!!! John managed to pull

the deficit back to 11-13 but Ted wasn’t to be denied and closed out the

game 15-12 to pull one game back. The 4th game was very similar to the

third, with a lot of cautious rallies and some fantastic retrieving from

both players. The scores were close and the crowd could sense a fifth game as the scores stood at 11-11 with nothing between the two players. A couple of errors from Ted, gave John a 13-11 advantage before Ted levelled with a drop shot in the nick and an error from John to tie the game at 13-13. Unfortunately, a tin from Ted and a stroke awarded against him handed the game to John 15-13 and the match 3-1 in arguably one of the hardest fought finals in the Danny Gamble tournament!!

Final Score: John Brewer (Rodmersham) beat Ted Jeal (Bexley) 3-1 (15-12, 15-8, 12-15, 15-13)

Full Results and Scores can be found by going to the ‘DRAW’ section.
